Best day of the week right? Who’s feeling like a cocktail? Is it weird that I am raising my hand as I type?
It is supposed to be a ridiculously nice weekend in northern California and I can’t wait to fix me up a big batch of these! I first had this delicious concoction at Mateo’s Cocina Latina in Healdsburg, CA. I think it must have been a combination of me raving loudly about how amazing it was and the fact that I drank it at world record speed that made the barenter turn to me at the bar and ask, “Do you want the recipe?” It’s possible I shouted “Yes!” a little too excitedly, but I don’t think so.
Written on a napkin was this recipe for liquid gold…La Paloma Hermosa. Which means the beautiful dove. Not sure what at all that has to do with this drink but it sounds nice huh?
I love grapefruit juice in cocktails. LOVE. Especially on a warm day with some chips and guacamole to snack on, there isn’t much better in my book!
Get your juicing hands ready and squeeze your grapefruits and limes. Small side note, I had a cut on my hand when I was doing this and it was torture! But I knew something so delicious was going to come out of it…
Combine everything in a shaker and voila! You’ve got a refreshing and wonderfully yummy cocktail. I am picturing myself with one of this sitting in my yard somewhere around 5:01 today, join me won’t you??
The original recipe calls for a dash of grapefruit bitters. I didn’t have grapefruit bitters/think that might be one of those things bartenders get from some magical store that no one else has access to, and they turned out perfectly delicious. But if you have access to the super secret liquor store, more power to ya! (and can you let me know where it is?? )
Last but not least, the bartender at Mateo’s used a vegetable peeler to zest a strip of grapefruit skin, then he rolled it up and placed it in the drink. This did two things #1 it looked awesome! and #2 rolling it over the drink released all the delicious grapefruit “essence” that lives in the skin. I tried, mine definitely wasn’t as pretty as his but I think it got the point across!

|La Paloma Hermosa||
- 2 oz Tequila
- 3/4 oz lime juice
- 1/2 oz agave
- 1/2 oz Saint Germain (or elderflower liquor)
- 1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
- dash of grapefruit bitters *optional
- Squeeze grapefruit juice and lime juice. Set aside.
- Combine all ingredients in an ice filled shaker. Shake well.
- Pour into a glass with a salt rim (optional).
- Use a vegetable peeler to zest a strip of grapefruit skin. Roll up into a rose-like shape and place in the glass.
- Makes one cocktail
